Philosopher Theodore Adorno said, “After Auschwitz, to write a poem is barbaric” and that “it has become possible to write poetry today.” Fortunately, Yiddish writers were not aware of this impossibility and wrote profusely and profoundly on the subject. Some, like Yankev Glatshteyn in America, foretold the oncoming disaster, others like Avrom Sutzkever, Elie Wiesel and Rokhl Korn lived through it themselves, in ghettoes, as partisans in the forests, as prisoners in concentration camps or in exile in Central Asia. In her lecture, SHEVA ZUCKER will share recordings of some of these writers reading their own work and discuss how they grapple with questions of faith, survivor guilt, the erasure of Holocaust memory and the Jewish relationship to a hostile world, both before and after the Holocaust.

Dr. Sheva Zucker is the author of the textbooks Yiddish: An Introduction to the Language, Literature & Culture, Vols. I & II and the editor and producer of the CDs The Golden Peacock: Voice of the Yiddish Writer and The Golden Peacock: Bilingual. She has taught Yiddish for many years in the Uriel Weinreich Program in Yiddish Language, Literature and Culture, currently under the auspices of Bard College and the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research in New York City. She currently teaches for the YIVO and the Workers Circle. From 2005 until 2020 she served as the executive director of the League for Yiddish as well as the editor-in-chief of its magazine Afn Shvel. She has taught and lectured on Yiddish language, literature and culture on five continents. Her research and translation work focus mostly on women in Yiddish literature. She is a graduate of the I.L. Peretz Folk School, (dayschool) and mitlshul.
